In the Utena TV show, Kazami Tatsuya is a childhood friend of Shinohara Wakaba and a current student at Ohtori Academy. Like Wakaba, he is notable chiefly for not being notable; unlike Wakaba, he does not even receive an invitation to the Mikage Seminar as a consolation prize.

Background

Tatsuya and Wakaba went to the same elementary school, where Wakaba recruited him to protect her from bullying about her onion-shaped head. Tatsuya was ambivalent about this role at best, but evidently performed well enough to gain Wakaba's trust and the title of "Prince Onion." Later, however, he transferred to a different school without saying goodbye to Wakaba, earning Wakaba's scorn.

Personality

While he is seen on camera in at least one other episode, Tatsuya's only speaking lines come in Episode 19. As a result, he gets little direct characterization during the series. According to Wakaba, Tatsuya is a liar and a womanizer -- but she calls him this on the day of their reintroduction, the first time she's seen him since elementary school, so her credibility is questionable. On camera, we see Tatsuya fail to acknowledge Wakaba's hostility and pretend to have a crush on Utena in order to get close to Wakaba, but we have no direct evidence of his promiscuity.

Tatsuya is best remembered for his visit to Nemuro Memorial Hall after learning that Wakaba is in love with someone else (Saionji Kyouichi). His visit is memorable because he arrives without an appointment; while Mikage agrees to see him, during his confession the Black Rose elevator reverses direction and ascends for the only time in the series. Mikage sends Tatsuya away, telling him that he is a good person and that "this isn't a place for someone like you." This is very nearly the last we see of Tatsuya during the series.

Tatsuya also appears in Adolescence Mokushiroku, where he pairs off with Wakaba for their sketching assignment.

Trivia

Tatsuya Kazami is remembered, not without justice, as "the most heterosexual guy in the series" as a result of NajiMinkin's parody dub of Episode 2.
